Refrigerated & Insulated

Refrigerated Shipping Containers Melbourne

Melbourne can get pretty hot and sticky in summer, and to help out those businesses that have goods that need to be stored or transported at a steady temperature, Shipping Containers Melbourne have a great range of refrigerated shipping containers available in Melbourne depot which are ideal for keeping goods cold or frozen. Also known as a ‘reefer’ refrigerated containers are great for storage and transporting goods that require a specific (low) temperature.

What’s the Difference Between a Refrigerated and Insulated Container?

This is a very common question we get asked, and the answer is surprisingly simple. Refrigerated containers have a motor and need a power source like a generator on the vehicle transporting it, whereas insulated containers rely on their insulation properties in the walls to maintain a steady temperature.

At Shipping Containers Melbourne, we have both refrigerated and insulated shipping containers available, ready to go at moment’s notice. This is particularly important if you have a cool-room that’s broken down, or have an urgent order that needs shipping out immediately.

Refrigerated Containers Melbourne for Sale or Hire

At Shipping Containers Melbourne, we have 3 phase refrigerated containers both for sale and hire in 20 foot and 40 foot sizes. Single phase refrigerated containers are also available. The refrigerated containers are fitted with a variable temperature control that enables storage of your goods to be kept at a chosen temperature of between +25° C and -25° C.

Refrigerated Containers – Guaranteed Cold!

We don’t need to tell you that refrigerated shipping containers, need to be of good quality! A whole container full of frozen goods thawing on the tarmac can be an expensive nightmare. Therefor buying or hiring your refrigerated shipping container from a reputable and experienced company is a must. At Shipping Containers Melbourne, our high quality refrigerated containers are inspected and pre-tripped before delivery. And we can also offer a breakdown service (in major metro areas) if required.

Insulated Containers for Sale

There are a few types of insulated containers available on the market. The most basic ones are ex-refrigerated containers (known as NOR or non-operational containers). These containers have generally had their motor removed, and so are no longer refrigerated. But they still have all the strength, robustness and (most importantly) insulation qualities of a refrigerated container. There are also purpose-built insulated shipping containers. These are newly-built containers that have never had a motor. They’re ideal for either shipping goods, or conversion into other purposes like site offices, portable accommodation or shipping container houses. Ordinary general purpose shipping containers are often insulated too. We can arrange insulation for a standard container with 50mm Bondor and install air-conditioning if you are planning to use the container for living, sleeping or working in.

Non Operational Refrigerated Containers

Non-Operational (NOR) Refrigerated Containers. As noted above, these are decommissioned refrigerated containers, which means the powered cooling equipment is no longer operational, but all the heavy-duty insulation of a refrigerated container still exists. They are available in 20 foot and 40 foot sizes. As with the refrigerated containers, capacity and space is smaller due to the motor housing and insulation.

Insulated Purpose-Built Shipping Containers

These containers have been designed from the outset for goods that don’t need to be refrigerated, but do need a steady temperature. Purpose-built insulated containers don’t have the motor housing of an NOR (non operational container) and have slightly more space and capacity. At Shipping Containers Melbourne we have purpose-built insulated containers available for sale in 20 foot and 40 foot sizes.

Accessorise your Insulated or Refrigerated Container

We have a range of modifications and accessories that can be used to create a refrigerated or insulated shipping container specific to your needs, including butcher doors, shelving, electrical fit outs, lighting, paint, signage, ramps and more. If you’re converting an insulated container into another purpose like a workshop or shed or extra accommodation, we can help there too. We provide all sorts of accessories and modifications like air-conditioning, kitchenettes and bathrooms, phone fit-outs and more.

Which Container is Right for You?

If your goods being shipped are packed frozen or refrigerated, and are only travelling a short distance or time before they are transferred to a refrigerated or frozen facility, they are often shipped in an insulated container. Tightly packed goods in an insulated container can keep their temperature for a remarkable long time. If your goods are travelling a long distance however (overseas or interstate for example), or will be in transit for a long time, a refrigerated container with access to a power source is obviously required.

Refrigerated Shipping Container Sizes and Capacity

At Shipping Containers Melbourne, we have refrigerated shipping containers available for sale or hire in both 20 foot and 40 foot sizes. Because the size of shipping containers is standardised, refrigerated containers have the same outside dimensions as general purpose containers. However, because of the motor housing, insulation and refrigeration requirements, the space and capacity inside is considerably smaller.

Refrigerated Containers Make a Great Portable Coolroom

Got a big order for your chilled goods and don’t know where you’re going to fit them? Need more frozen storage space over Christmas and the summer? Refrigerated shipping containers in melbourne are a fantastic alternative to a permanent mobile cool-room and can be shipped in (and out again) at a moment’s notice. Great for caterers, small businesses, restaurants, cafés, film sites, festivals, parties, large functions, construction sites, mine sites anywhere a temporary (or permanent if you like) refrigeration solution is required. They’re also good as a back-up for when existing coolrooms are acting up or are being repaired. The beauty of a shipping container is that it’s easily moved, so if your business expands and you move to new premises, you can take your shipping container with you (unlike a new permanent cool-room!)

Insulated Shipping Container

Using Insulated for Containers as an Office or Home

Here’s a word to the wise. If you’re thinking of living, sleeping, working or even just hanging out in your shipping container, make sure it’s an insulated one. One of the benefits of shipping containers is the fact that they are constructed with solid Corten steel – great for the rough treatment they get on docks, ships, trains and trucks. But this same steel that is so good for protection from the elements is no good for protection from the temperature and trust us when we tell you that insulation is a must. Cold day? Even hotter inside your container. Hot night? Your bed will feel like a rotisserie. If you’re living, working, sleeping or playing in a shipping container, make sure it’s an insulated one!
